AMPO Review

AMPO Review | Digital Publishing Website Design & Development

Web Space Design developed AMPO Review as a complete digital publishing platform for African energy, mining, oil and infrastructure news. The WordPress website combines magazine-style editorial layouts, advertising positions, category hubs, events, magazine archives and SEO-focused content architecture within a responsive publishing system that can be managed internally by the AMPO Review editorial team.

Project Overview

AMPO Review is an African-focused digital publication covering power and energy, mining, oil, infrastructure, projects, technology, interviews and industry events.

Web Space Design was appointed to develop a new website that could support AMPO Review as an active online publication rather than a conventional corporate website. The platform needed to accommodate frequent article publishing, multiple editorial categories, sponsored content, advertising positions, events, magazine archives and subscription functionality while remaining straightforward for the editorial team to manage through WordPress.

The project required a balance between the visual structure of a magazine website and the practical requirements of a content-heavy publishing platform. Particular attention was given to homepage content hierarchy, article discovery, advertising placements, search visibility and mobile usability.

The Client Brief

AMPO Review required a website capable of supporting a growing African business and industry publication. Unlike a standard business website where most pages remain relatively static, AMPO Review needed to accommodate a continuous flow of new content.

The website therefore had to provide clear editorial sections for subjects including:

The homepage also needed to accommodate different editorial layouts rather than presenting every article in the same grid format. This created an important design requirement: individual sections needed their own visual identity while still forming part of a consistent overall publication.

Magazine-Style Homepage Design

A major part of the project involved developing the AMPO Review homepage. The homepage acts as the publication’s primary content discovery page and needed to present a relatively large amount of information without becoming difficult to navigate.

A combination of editorial layouts was used to distinguish featured stories, Editors’ Picks, category content, advertising and other publication features. Different post grid configurations allow AMPO Review to place greater emphasis on selected articles while still providing access to a broader range of recently published content. An Editors Pick system was implemented using WordPress tags. This enables the editorial team to determine which stories appear in prominent homepage positions without needing to rebuild the page each time the featured content changes.

The homepage was also developed to accommodate advertising in several formats, allowing commercial placements to sit alongside editorial content without disrupting the overall structure of the publication.

SEO Structure

Search engine optimisation formed part of the website development process from the start. The website was structured so individual articles, category archives and key publication pages could each target their own search topics rather than competing with one another.

SEO work included the development and optimisation of:

  • page titles
  • meta descriptions
  • category descriptions
  • focus keywords
  • internal linking structures
  • article headings
  • image optimisation
  • URL structures
  • publication category pages

Yoast SEO was integrated to provide the AMPO Review editorial team with a practical way of managing page and article metadata when publishing new content. Particular attention was given to creating substantial category descriptions for AMPO Review’s key subject areas, providing search engines with more contextual information than a standard WordPress category archive would normally contain.

Digital Magazine Integration

AMPO Review also publishes magazine content alongside its online editorial coverage. A dedicated magazine archive was incorporated into the website, providing a central location where previous and current editions can be presented. Magazine promotions are also incorporated into prominent website positions so digital visitors can move between daily online content and longer-form magazine material. This helps the website function as the central digital platform for both sides of the publication.

Events and Industry Coverage

Events form an important part of AMPO Review’s subject matter, particularly within the African energy, mining and infrastructure sectors. The website therefore includes dedicated event content and promotional areas.

This allows AMPO Review to publish:

  • event announcements
  • conference information
  • industry exhibitions
  • event-related articles
  • sponsored event content

The events structure can continue expanding as the publication develops partnerships with conference organisers and industry organisations.

The completed AMPO Review website provides the publication with a structured digital platform capable of supporting regular editorial publishing, advertising, events, sponsored content and magazine distribution.

The platform gives the AMPO Review team control over day-to-day publishing while retaining a structured homepage and clearly defined content categories.

Most importantly, the site has been built to expand.

New categories, advertisers, events, articles and publication features can be introduced without requiring the underlying website to be rebuilt.

The project demonstrates Web Space Design’s ability to develop websites where content architecture, design, publishing workflow, commercial requirements, SEO and technical performance all need to operate together.
